This coffee table is a single slab of spalted maple, with dark lines of spalting running through patches of quilted figure. The edges of the slab have been carefully prepared to showcase the natural topography of the wood, and the end-grain hand-shaped to complement the organic form.
The finish is several coats of thin coats of tung oil, each one carefully buffed back before applying the next layer. It cures to a low sheen and is far tougher than it looks. The table stands on powder-coated steel hairpin legs.
