This five-tier bookshelf pairs a slim steel frame with solid walnut shelves. I designed the frame, and it was fabricated to my design by a metalworker.
The shelves are character grade walnut, chosen for its knots, color variation, and crotch figure rather than uniform grain. They're finished in several thin coats of tung oil, each buffed back before adding the next layer. The result is a low-sheen finish that brings out the figure and holds up to everyday use.
